A strong STAR answer
Question
Tell me about a time you dealt with an upset customer.
- Situation
- "I was working as a cashier at a grocery store on a busy holiday weekend. A customer was upset because a sale item scanned at the regular price."
- Task
- "I needed to fix the price quickly without holding up a long line."
- Action
- "I apologized, checked the flyer to confirm the sale price and called my supervisor for a price override. While we waited, I asked the next customer if they'd like to go ahead, so the line kept moving."
- Result
- "The customer left happy and thanked me for sorting it out. My manager later asked me to show two new cashiers how to handle price overrides."
This answer works because it's specific, focuses on the candidate's own actions and ends with a clear result.
"Tell me about yourself"
Use a simple present, past and future structure, and keep it to about a minute:
Present: "I'm a third-year business student, and I work part time in customer service at a busy grocery store."
Past: "Before that, I volunteered as treasurer for a student club, where I managed our budget and tracked expenses in Excel."
Future: "I'm excited about this accounting assistant role because it combines my interest in finance with the customer skills I've built."
